CENTO [ or an Embroidery Poem ]

The sky was like a pool, calm and baby blue
And the moon looked like silver
And the house was like a toaster
And the doors were like a thousand sheets of paper.

I was happy because it was summer
Jumping like a frog.
I ran like an Olympian
In the killing wind
In the angry wind
The shouting wind
The rushing wind
The dead silent wind.

The sky was like a glass of water
And I danced like a ballerina.
The people were like walking dolls
The trees were like swaying hands
And the sun looked like a lightbulb
And the sky was like an ocean
And the yellow flowers flew away.

And I was sad because there was nothing to play with.
The people looked like people.
And the streets were like dirty ears.

If I was an artist I would draw a lion
Streets like bubble gum
Streets like white chocolate
Like popping green candy
Trees like green broccoli
People like gingerbread.

If I was a dancer I would dance to every song
Screaming like a yowling dog
In the shiny universe.

And the people were like rush rush rush.
And the trees were like whoosh whoosh whoosh.

And the sun looked like a shining god
A dragon that felt like it was going to explode
She was like a boss and a beggar also
She swam like a guru
She scratched like a cat
She fell like a crazy person
And I was nervous because
I might have a bad dream.
I was like a spider
In the birth sky.

And the trees were like a secret door
And the streets were like books
The streets were like rivers
The sky was like water
The sky was like faint space
Like a blue roof
Like a swimming pool
A white ball of wind
A cloud like a pillow
Like a marshmallow.

And the people were like pigeons
And the trees were like giraffes
In the hard wind
In the fast wind
The strong wind
The gray wind
The freezing wind.

And the trees were like hairy snakes.
And the universe felt like a never ending thing.
And the sky felt sad
And I cried like a waterfall
But the forest felt better.
